Hello there!
It's time once again for another BluzNdaBlood Show! This is
your Brutha Dave blasting the blues to ya once again from the blues filled studio in the
Star City of Virginia! |
|
|
|
It's that time
where I devote a show to some of the great women that we
have in the blues today! I posted a message on the
BluzNdaBlood Facebook site and asked for requests and
received LOTS! So many that I can't play them all in one
show but this show is a start! |
|
|
|
|
|
Well, we started off the show with
Debra Denise Solum, currently known as the beautiful Honey
Piazza! That was "Expression Session" from
Rod Piazza and The Mighty Flyers's CD Soul Monster from
Delta
Groove Music! If you recall, Honey was the 2008 Pinetop
Perkins Piano Player of the Year award winner! |
|
|
|
|
 |
|
|
|
|
|
So who else are we gonna hear from on my “Women
in Blues, Ladies By Request” show other than Honey Piazza?
Well, how about Lisa
Mann,
Shelley-Lynne Hardinge, the lead singer for Hip Shakin'
Mama and The Leg Men,
Karen Lovely,
B.J. Allen and Blue
Voodoo, Ellie Lee
and Blues Fury,
Chrissie
O'Dell and One Hot Mess,
Pat Pepin, Cee Cee
James, Janiva
Magness, Kirsten
Thien, Candye Kane,
and wrapping up with
Ruth Brown! |
|
|
|
|
|
So…. Are you ready
ready to hear some great tunes from some more super women in
the blues in this "Ladies By Request” show?
Well, I hope so! Crank it up my
friends, we’re off and running!
|

What a great first set to start off our show! That was
Lisa Mann with
"Down Home Blues" from her self-titled CD. I had the chance
to see her perform numerous time at this year's
International Blues Challenge! And thanks to Lisa for
sending me a copy of the CD! After Lisa, we heard
Shelley-Lynne Hardinge with her tune "My Claws". Thanks
to Shelley for sending me the MP3s! She's got a CD coming
out real soon! And we ended up the first set with
Karen Lovely singing
"Blues Ain't Far Behind" from her
Pretty Pear Records
CD called Still The Rain. I wish Karen luck this year at the
Blues Music Awards! Thanks to Mark and Melissa for
requesting Karen Lovely!

BJ Allen suggested I play Reba Russell but also mentioned to
play a little BJ Allen if I could find some! Well, I
contacted her and she sent me some! Thanks, BJ! So our
second full set treated us to
B.J. Allen and Blue
Voodoo with a song I played back in March of 2007 on my
first Women in Blues shows! That song was about Beale Street
and is "Disneyland For The Blues" off of their CD called The
Storm! We'll be treated to more of
BJ Allen and Blue
Voodoo in shows to come! After BJ we heard
Ellie Lee and Blues Fury
with "Hard Lovin' Man" from their Rhythm of the Blues CD! I
had the pleasure of catching
Ellie Lee play in
the IBCs this year! Another IBC vet is
Chrissie
O'Dell and One Hot Mess! Craig suggested I play her and
I played "Forecast Calls For Change" off her Dime Time
Productions CD If I Had a Dime!
|
|
 |
 |
 |
|
Our next set
started off with a tune from my friend from Maine,
Pat Pepin playing her tune "Long Haul Trucker" from her
CD
In It for the Long Haul. Pat and I always run into each
other in Memphis! I first met her many years ago at the
Women In Blues festival that blues woman Michele Seidman put
on down in Wilmington! Pat is a real hoot is very saxy! :-)
Following Pat is Cee
Cee James singing "I Ain't Superstitious" from her FWG
Records Seriously Raw
CD. We wrapped up the set with the beautiful
Janiva Magness
singing the slow song "Save Me" from the
Alligator Records CD
"The Devil Is An Angel Too".
|
|
 |
|
|
|
Next up is someone requested by Betsie, Mark, and Kool
Breeze! This is Kirsten
Thien getting a little help from Hubert Sumlin on
guitar! Here's "Please Drive" off her Screen Door Records CD
called Delicious!
|
|
 |
 |
|
|
Well okay folks!
Now it's time to hear two songs that can both be considered
a little dirty! Ya know, blues has always had songs with
double entendres, but sometimes they don't beat around the
bush! Well, maybe is this case it does! Here's
Candye Kane singing
"Masturbation Blues" off her
Ruf Records CD
called White Trash Girl! Ya know I had this song on my list
to play in numerous shows but I always yanked it from the
list! After Candye, we'll be treated to the classic
Ruth Brown song singing about her working in a furniture
store and trying to sell a chair to a man. So she sings "If
I Can't Sell It, I'll Keep Sittin' On It!"...
